Suburban Organics deliveries 100% organic fruits and veggies to your door! During the local growing season the company supports the local community by sourcing produce from farmers in Bucks County. Taking it one step further and addressing a major issue in the United States, food waste, Suburban Organics recently partnered with Rolling Harvest Food Rescue.

In 2010, within the United States alone, 34 plus million tons of food waste was generated. Only 3% was recycled meaning 33 million tons of food went to landfills and incinerators. Many reports and documentaries such as Dive! suggest that much of this food is still edible and with hungry people living on the streets that’s a real problem. Enter Cathy Snyder.

Cathy Snyder, leader of the Rolling Harvest organization, got her start by working with the Fisherman’s Mark Food Pantry in Lambertville, PA. Lynne Goldman of Bucks County Taste reported, “One day she [Cathy Snyder] showed up at the New Hope Farmer’s Market and asked farmers if they wanted to donate any leftovers. That was the beginning.”

Lynne Goldman introduced Suburban Organics to Cathy and after an initial phone call and a tour of the facility it was a match made in Bucks County. Cathy’s first pick up at Suburban Organics went to the Fisherman’s Mark Food Pantry and included 5 cases worth of carrots, celery and green leaf lettuce. Instead of making its way into a landfill this produce made its way into happy stomachs.

Cathy and her team of volunteers are in the process of becoming incorporated as a non-profit 501 (c)3 and are busy gearing up for the local growing season! Look for an interview with Cathy Snyder and Rolling Harvest coming soon!
