Rolling Harvest Food Rescue, a local hunger-relief nonprofit organization based in Bucks County that works with farmers to share donated surplus fruits, vegetables and organic meats with food pantries, is honored to announce the donation of a brand new 2016 Chevy Silverado pickup truck made possible through the generosity of the Philadelphia-based Rollins Family Foundation.
The Rollins Family Foundation was founded by former Phillies All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins and his wife Johari. The family has made a very active commitment to go further in finding a solution to help their community by providing children, families and at-risk youth access to fresh food. “Access to fresh food shouldn’t be a luxury,” said Rollins. “Johari and I are very impressed with the work that Rolling Harvest Food Rescue has been doing and we are thrilled that this vehicle will assist in expanding their outreach of those in need.”
Cathy Snyder founded Rolling Harvest after witnessing food insecurity and the limited availability of healthy food donations while volunteering at a local food pantry. “We were handing out unhealthy processed food and bruised bananas to families needing help. And a new farmers market had just opened up around the corner,” Snyder says about those early days in 2010. That lead to the creation ofRolling Harvest Food Rescue, which now partners with more than 30 farms and food producers to distribute nutrient-dense, delicious fresh food to more than 45 hunger-relief sites each week throughout the local growing season from May to December.
“This heavy-duty pickup truck from Jimmy and Johari Rollins is just what we’ve been needing to be able to more effectively and efficiently handle the growing amount of healthy food that is being offered to us,” says Snyder. “This means more veggies for more of our neighbors in need! Because of this new delivery vehicle, our farm partners are already telling us they will plan to donate more, and some have now said they even want to grow extra for us. We are so grateful that The Rollins Family Foundation shares our vision and mission!”
