Hunger Crisis: It Does Not Have to Be
Virtual Program via Zoom

The League of Women Voters of Bucks County’s concluding session in a series of roundtable presentations about the breadth and depth of the problem of hunger and food insecurity in Bucks County takes place on Saturday, April 10, from 10:30 AM to noon. Register at https://bit.ly/HungerSeries. Attendees will hear from people committed to raising awareness and actively engaged in addressing the needs of hunger and food insecurity. The April 10 program, “Hunger Crisis: It Doesn’t Have to be So,” will identify how people can address the problem.

Helping attendees to understand both the complexities of and opportunities for food pantries, as well as strategies to see that pantries can offer nutritious food, will be Madelaine (Maddie) Burgess, Food Pantry Manager at the Bucks County Housing Group and Co-Chair of the Hunger and Nutrition Coalition of Bucks County. Maddie oversees the work of the two BCHG food pantries, where she initially worked as a volunteer. She has a passion for addressing the issue of food insecurity and endeavors to make sure the pantries are able to offer healthy, nutritious food. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Following a sales career in Broadcasting, Philadelphia native and food justice advocate, Cathy Snyder, spent 14 years living overseas and raising her family in Europe and Asia before returning home and beginning her social impact journey. Awakened to the depth of food insecurity while volunteering at a local pantry in New Hope, she realized there was an untapped resource in the local agricultural community to help fill the nutrition gap. She reached out to farmers and in a few short years, Cathy has grown Rolling Harvest Food Rescue into a vibrant network of volunteers, farms and food producers, and hunger-relief sites.

Participating in the panel, is Kathy Fisher who joined the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger in 2014. As Policy Director, she performs research and data analysis; presents information to elected officials, service providers and community members; and works with a wide range of anti-hunger partners to advocate for effective policies and programs to fight hunger. Prior to her work at the Coalition, she spent years focused on family economic security issues and has over twenty years of advocacy experience. Kathy is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in law (JD) and Social Work (MSW).

In this virtual exchange moderated by League member Liz Fritsch, topics discussed will include what proposed legislation is relevant to solving these problems? How does Bucks County compare with Pennsylvania at large? Are our elected officials fully aware of the challenges people are facing from hunger? What can people do to address these problems? What are effective ways to advocate? Learn answers to these questions and more on April 10. Register for this free program at https://bit.ly/HungerSeries. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing the information needed to view the discussion on April 10. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions. The program will be recorded and available at the League of Women Voters of Bucks County’s YouTube channel and @LWVBucksCounty on Facebook.
