Food, Social Justice and the Power of Collaboration, by Cathy Snyder, Founder and Executive Director, Rolling Harvest Food Rescue, appears in the April/May 2018 issue of Bucks County Women’s Journal. 

Some of us at Rolling Harvest Food Rescue are huge food and hunger policy wonks, some just want to share great food with people who can’t afford it or don’t have access to it, some want to focus on our nutrition and culinary education outreach, and some of us just want to focus on volunteering to get our hands in the beautiful soil while harvesting food for donation at our partner farms. But we all have come to realize that we are a small part of a much bigger movement to address the hunger, food inequality, and waste we see all around us, in the midst of so much abundance.

Food-insecurity used to be more noticeable. Now it’s less obvious but just as desperate a situation.

From Bucks County Women’s Journal, June/July 2017: Making a Difference

Rolling Harvest Food Rescue is a modern-day gleaning organization, referring to the ancient biblical practice of farmers leaving crops in their fields for the hungry to collect for nourishment.

Since 2010, Rolling Harvest Food Rescue has been delivering donations of fresh products directly from local partnering farms to food pantries and community meal programs serving at-risk, food insecure families in Bucks County, as well as families over the river in Hunderdon and Mercer Counties.

It all began with a simple concept: ensuring that individuals facing food insecurity get the healthy produce they need for a nutritious diet and that local produce would not go to waste.
